Nikola Tesla
Inventor & Electrical Engineer
Nikola Tesla (1856-1943) was a Serbian-American inventor, electrical engineer, mechanical engineer, and futurist best known for his contributions to the design of the modern alternating current (AC) electrical supply system.
Born in Smiljan, Croatia (then Austrian Empire), Tesla studied engineering in Graz and Prague before immigrating to the United States in 1884. He briefly worked for Thomas Edison before striking out on his own.
His invention of the AC induction motor and polyphase AC system revolutionized the electrical industry. His partnership with George Westinghouse brought AC power to the world, famously powering the 1893 World's Columbian Exposition and harnessing Niagara Falls for hydroelectric power.
Tesla held over 300 patents and envisioned technologies decades ahead of his time: wireless communication, remote control, radar, X-ray imaging, and even concepts resembling the internet and smartphones. His Colorado Springs experiments produced artificial lightning bolts of millions of volts.
Despite his genius, Tesla died nearly penniless in a New York hotel room in 1943. His rivalry with Edison (the "War of Currents") and his inability to commercialize many inventions left him financially ruined but intellectually vindicated by history.
