Leonardo di ser Piero da Vinci (1452-1519) was an Italian polymath whose areas of interest included painting, sculpting, architecture, science, music, mathematics, engineering, literature, anatomy, geology, astronomy, botany, paleontology, and cartography. He is widely considered one of the most diversely talented individuals ever to have lived.

Born illegitimate in Vinci, Tuscany, Leonardo was apprenticed to the artist Andrea del Verrocchio in Florence. He quickly surpassed his master and went on to create some of the most iconic artworks in history, including the Mona Lisa and The Last Supper.

But Leonardo's genius extended far beyond art. His notebooks - over 7,000 pages survive - contain designs for flying machines, tanks, solar power concentrators, calculators, and detailed anatomical studies centuries ahead of their time. He dissected over 30 human cadavers to understand the body, producing anatomical drawings of unprecedented accuracy.

He worked for many of the most powerful patrons of his era, including Lorenzo de' Medici, Ludovico Sforza, Cesare Borgia, and King Francis I of France. His combination of artistic genius and scientific rigor makes him the archetypal Renaissance man and a model for interdisciplinary thinking.
