Gaius Julius Caesar (100-44 BCE) was a Roman general, statesman, and historian who played a critical role in the events that led to the demise of the Roman Republic and the rise of the Roman Empire. He is considered one of the greatest military commanders in history.

Born into an old patrician family, Caesar rose through the Roman political system, forming the First Triumvirate with Pompey and Crassus. His conquest of Gaul (58-50 BCE) extended Rome's territory to the English Channel and the Rhine, and he became the first Roman general to cross both.

His crossing of the Rubicon River in 49 BCE, in defiance of the Senate, sparked a civil war that he won decisively. As dictator, he enacted sweeping reforms: the Julian calendar, land redistribution, citizenship expansion, and public works. His clemency toward defeated enemies was unprecedented - and ultimately fatal.

On March 15, 44 BCE (the Ides of March), Caesar was assassinated by a group of senators led by Brutus and Cassius. His death triggered another civil war and ultimately led to the rise of his adopted heir Octavian, who became Augustus, the first Roman Emperor.
