Confucius
Chinese Philosopher & Teacher
Kong Qiu (551-479 BCE), known in the West as Confucius, was a Chinese philosopher, teacher, editor, politician, and writer of the Spring and Autumn period. His philosophy, known as Confucianism, emphasized personal and governmental morality, correctness of social relationships, justice, kindness, and sincerity.
Born in the state of Lu (modern Shandong province), Confucius came from a family of former nobles who had fallen on hard times. He was largely self-educated and became one of the most learned men of his age. He served briefly as a government official but spent most of his life as a traveling teacher.
His teachings, preserved in the Analerta (Lunyu), focused on ren (benevolence), li (ritual propriety), xiao (filial piety), and zhengming (rectification of names - the importance of using language precisely). He believed that social harmony arose from each person fulfilling their role with integrity.
Confucius attracted a devoted following of students - tradition says 3,000 - and his teachings became the foundation of Chinese education, governance, and social ethics for over two millennia. The imperial examination system, which selected government officials based on merit and knowledge of Confucian classics, lasted from 605 to 1905 CE.
His influence extends far beyond China, shaping Korean, Japanese, Vietnamese, and broader East Asian culture. Today, Confucius Institutes worldwide promote Chinese language and culture.
