Cleopatra VII Philopator (69-30 BCE) was the last active ruler of the Ptolemaic Kingdom of Egypt. Far from the seductress of popular myth, she was one of antiquity's most formidable political minds. She spoke nine languages, was educated in mathematics, philosophy, and astronomy, and was the first Ptolemaic ruler to actually learn the Egyptian language.

She ascended to the throne at 18, initially co-ruling with her younger brother Ptolemy XIII. When he attempted to seize sole power, she raised an army and allied with Julius Caesar, with whom she had a son, Caesarion. After Caesar's assassination, she formed a political and romantic alliance with Mark Antony, producing three children.

Cleopatra's Egypt was the wealthiest kingdom in the Mediterranean, and she used that wealth strategically to maintain Egyptian independence against the expanding Roman Republic. Her alliance with Antony led to a direct confrontation with Octavian (later Augustus), culminating in the Battle of Actium in 31 BCE.

Her death in 30 BCE - traditionally attributed to an asp bite, though modern historians debate this - marked the end of both the Ptolemaic dynasty and ancient Egyptian civilization as an independent state. Egypt became a Roman province, and the ancient world was forever changed.
