Alexander the Great
King of Macedon & Conqueror
Alexander III of Macedon (356-323 BCE), commonly known as Alexander the Great, was a king of the ancient Greek kingdom of Macedon. By the age of thirty, he had created one of the largest empires in ancient history, stretching from Greece to northwestern India.
Tutored by Aristotle until age 16, Alexander succeeded his father Philip II at age 20 after Philip's assassination. He quickly consolidated power in Greece, then turned east. Over the next decade, he conquered the Persian Empire, Egypt (where he founded Alexandria), Central Asia, and parts of India.
He was undefeated in battle, and his military tactics - especially the use of the Macedonian phalanx combined with cavalry charges - are still studied at military academies. His battles at Granicus, Issus, and Gaugamela are considered masterpieces of ancient warfare.
Beyond conquest, Alexander sought to merge Greek and Eastern cultures, encouraging his soldiers to marry local women and adopting Persian court customs. He founded over 20 cities that bore his name, the most famous being Alexandria in Egypt, which became a beacon of learning for centuries.
He died in Babylon at age 32, possibly from fever, poisoning, or the cumulative effects of his many battle wounds. His empire fragmented after his death, but the Hellenistic civilization he created endured for centuries.
